Federal Trade Commission Publishes Copier Security Guide

The Federal Trade Commission has published a set of data security guidelines for copier users. "Copier Data Security: A Guide for Businesses" is available online at

http://business.ftc.gov >

The publication comes seven months after Congressman Ed Markey (D-MA) called for the government to investigate the risks to data security posed by digital machines. In a statement to CBS News, Markey said he is "pleased that the FTC has responded with this useful educational piece so that businesses can better ensure that any personal information is wiped clean before a copier moves on to the next user."

The FTC’s publication includes the following tips for end users:

  • Before you buy a copier, make sure the machine is included in your company’s IT security plan. Employees who are responsible for securing data stored on computers and servers should also have responsibility for securing the data stored on copiers.
  • Educate yourself about encryption and overwriting options, and familiarize yourself with the device’s security features.
  • Make sure networked copiers are securely integrated and thoroughly protected against outside cyber attacks or intrusions.
  • When you finish using the copier, check with the dealer, manufacturer, or servicing company for options on securing the hard drive.
